Employment Enterprise’s Aftercare programme provides support and mentoring to young people who have recently entered the workplace or further education. We offer them guidance, advice and a friendly face to ensure that they develop the skills necessary to sustain their employment and enhance their career prospects.
We are funded by a partnership between North Lanarkshire Council, South Lanarkshire Council and Scottish Enterprise Lanarkshire. The current project began in April 2008 and is funded to March 2008. Our overall aim is straightforward – to ensure that young people have the skills to hold down a job. In previous programmes, over 70% of our participants have found sustainable employment in a broad variety of workplaces, including offices, building sites and abattoirs. That’s why we’re regarded as a highly important part of the GRFW programme. More about Get Ready for Work Get Ready for Work is a training programme for young people aged 16-18 years, which prepares them for employment or further education. As well as developing their transferable skills, such as enthusiasm, motivation, reliability and communication, participants on the course are required to complete work placements before taking on full-time employment. The role of Aftercare mentors It can be daunting for a young person to go into the workplace for the first time, having to meet new people and take on new challenges. Our Aftercare mentors can do whatever is required to make sure that transition goes smoothly. How do we do it? By meeting young people in the workplace and providing 1:1 guidance. By using the Bridges to Employability Soft Skills Assessment Tool to help young people set goals and visualise their future in work. By providing participants with an Individual Learning Account which helps them focus on their progress. Benefits for all Our mentors are contactable during working hours – and outside them if necessary – to help iron out any problems that participants may encounter. Naturally, we’re just as happy to assist employers should any difficulties arise with our participants, because we want the same thing that they do – trained, dedicated, sustainable employees. Training providers also benefit from working alongside us because it keeps them up-to-date with their former trainees’ progress and shares the responsibility of post-training guidance.
